Surgical Services Patient Stories

Arroyo Grande Community Hospital provides safety and healing for local residents and visitors when they’re at their most vulnerable. For patients undergoing surgery, receiving comfortable, quality care is especially important.

David Maislen

When David Maislen, a local beekeeper and organic grower, required a knee replacement, he said, “I felt very comfortable; very much at home. It was a peaceful atmosphere, and it was very reassuring. The staff was extremely pleasant, friendly, and attentive; and the care was really outstanding. It was a wonderful experience. The result was pretty incredible, too – hardly a scar!”

David added, “You know, a hospital is not a place that you really want to be, but it’s wonderful to have a high quality hospital to go to when you have to. Everybody should share in the giving to make sure that we have the most up-to-date equipment that we could possibly have close by.”

Elisa Ruiz

Elisa Ruiz, an Arroyo Grande Community Hospital Foundation Board member, is a mother of eight and a breast cancer warrior. She has been in the care of the surgical team at Arroyo Grande Community Hospital several times, and she shared, “Their warm smiles, consistent check-ins and quick feedback always create a very calm, anxiety-free environment.”

Recently, her 15 year-old daughter, Emma, was rushed to the Emergency Department, where it was discovered that she needed surgery for appendicitis. Elisa knew that her daughter was in good hands. She recalled, “An appendectomy was performed, and everything was done in a timely manner. Most importantly, my daughter’s pain was put at ease. When we returned home, she asked, ‘Can I go back to the hospital?’ She missed the help and comfort from the staff.”
