Cancer Care Fund

The Cancer Care Fund provides cancer patients and survivors in our community with their immediate basic needs – both financial and emotional – from diagnosis, throughout treatment and recovery. The ultimate goal of this assistance is to minimize disruption in patients’ treatment and to remove any unnecessary stress that could potentially diminish their health.

Services provided through the Cancer Care Fund include:

•Grocery gift cards

•Gas gift cards

•Other every day expenses

•Cancer support groups

•No-cost mammograms

•Genetic counseling/testing

•Other diagnostic screenings

Contributions to the Cancer Care Fund also helped Arroyo Grande Community Hospital purchase a new 3D Mammography machine in 2016, which can detect the size, shape, and location of breast irregularities earlier and with greater accuracy than the regular 2D Mammography machine.

An average of 1,460 people are diagnosed with cancer in San Luis Obispo County each year. Each patient has unique needs in his or her fight against cancer, but many face one common issue. With sudden increased expenses related to their cancer treatment – including medication, traveling expenses, child care, and more – patients find themselves confronting financial hardship in addition to the ever-present stress of living with a cancer diagnosis.

Thanks to ongoing community support, the Cancer Care Fund helps to ease some of this stress for local cancer patients through financial and emotional relief. Research studies have shown that reduced anxiety allows the body to better respond to cancer treatments, and that when patients feel supported physically and emotionally as well as clinically, treatment outcomes are better. The Cancer Care Fund exists to provide this support to each patient, ultimately making the cancer journey more manageable.
