The journey through a cancer diagnosis is profoundly personal, yet its impact reverberates through families and communities. Finding exceptional care close to home is not just convenient, but vital for healing. At Mission Hope Cancer Center - Arroyo Grande, this local expertise transforms lives, as seen by patient Ed Susank, whose experience underscores the critical role of community support.

Ed’s journey began with a routine Medicare wellness check in October 2024. Abnormal blood counts led to further investigation, and while he felt fine, a diagnosis of splenic marginal zone lymphoma came as a shock. Facing "scary stuff that makes you reflect on your own mortality," Ed found himself at Mission Hope - Arroyo Grande.

"I am so grateful for the care I received here," Ed reflects, emphasizing the local advantage. Living just 15 minutes away in Nipomo, receiving treatment in Arroyo Grande, rather than traveling to a big city, was invaluable. "Being able to stay in your own community, close to home, and go home after treatment to relax... all of that helps the healing process. It certainly helps the mental process."

Ed describes the Mission Hope – Arroyo Grande team as truly outstanding and compassionate, praising Dr. Ayrons, the dedicated nurses, and the entire staff. He highlights the infusion center's calming environment as a significant factor in his comfort. This supportive atmosphere, coupled with the invaluable assistance of a nurse navigator, "created such a positive experience" that it even allowed Ed to embark on a planned Hawaiian vacation mid-treatment. For a more in-depth look at Ed's journey, watch his full video testimony here.

Ed’s professional background, including 13 years on a hospital governing board, gives him a unique perspective on healthcare's financial and operational pressures. "I know the challenges that healthcare faces. So I think it's really important to support and encourage philanthropy." Innovations in treatment, like his monoclonal antibody therapy, didn't exist decades ago and are only possible through dedicated financial resources and ongoing research.

These vital resources and cutting-edge local care are sustained by philanthropic efforts, including Arroyo Grande Community Hospital Foundation’s annual Day of Hope. This event raises funds directly supporting cancer patients at Mission Hope Cancer Center, extending beyond medical treatment. These funds enable the Cancer Care Fund to provide services like the nurse navigator, a social worker, dietician, rehabilitation trainer, and transportation coordinator, all guiding patients from diagnosis through recovery, connecting them with needed resources. Day of Hope features enthusiastic teams selling newspapers across the Five Cities, a car show, a dog parade, online fundraising opportunities, and support from local businesses.

Ed demonstrates this commitment to giving back. "I just felt it was important for me to say thank you. It was important for me to recognize that having this care here is worthy of support." He underscores that services like nurse navigators, often not covered by insurance, rely heavily on such contributions.

We are fortunate to have such outstanding care right here in our community. Your support makes a difference in the lives of our neighbors, ensuring they receive outstanding care close to home.
