An Inspiring Journey
From Board Member to Patient

Cathy Cachu
Before becoming a patient herself, Cathy Cachu was already a passionate supporter of Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, serving for ten years on the Hospital Foundation Board. Her journey took an unexpected turn when a routine exam uncovered an abnormality, ultimately leading to a stage 3 uterine cancer diagnosis. Though it was a shock, Cathy quickly found strength by leaning on her family and the care team at Mission Hope Cancer Center in Arroyo Grande, whom she already knew well through her experiences with the Foundation. “Knowing the quality of the staff here at Arroyo Grande Hospital, and the connection I already had with the Hospital Foundation, it really was a no-brainer,” Cathy recalls.
What mattered most to Cathy during her treatment was the ability to receive care close to home. With long treatment days and countless appointments, the comfort of her family’s presence provided immense encouragement, while the warmth and expertise of the center’s medical staff ensured she never felt alone. From the first moment she checked in at registration to her chemotherapy sessions with Dr. Kennedy’s team, Cathy felt that every interaction contributed to her sense of hope. She credits the nurse navigator program as being especially supportive: “Being able to have that contact…really made a difference in helping me understand and cope with what I was going through.”
Now cancer-free, Cathy has come full circle, using her personal journey to advocate for community-focused care. Stepping into her role as the 2026 Day of Hope Ambassador for Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, she encouraged everyone to support the local resources that help patients like her and their families through difficult times. “You never know whose life this care may touch, and every donation helps local patients and families feel supported during a difficult time.” Cathy’s leadership reminds us that our ongoing support for Mission Hope Cancer Center - Arroyo Grande can bring comfort and healing to those who need it most, right here in our community.
