Recreational Therapy Garden

In addition to the exceptional core therapies provided in the Acute Rehabilitation Center patients also enjoy the uplifting and rejuvenating activities called recreation therapy. The Recreational Therapy Program was launched in 2018 due to grants and generous support from our community, and helps patients make improvements in the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and leisure areas of their lives. The Acute Rehabilitation Center would now like to expand this successful program to include horticulture therapy.

Benefits of horticulture therapy:

  • Provides a fun activity that patients can continue at home for further healing
  • Improves hand and visual coordination and strength
  • Increases socialization and attention to task
  • Relieves stress and improves mood
  • Improves memory, logic and understanding of concepts such as time, growth, and mortality
  • Provides a connection to nature and living plants to enhance feelings of hope, healing, confidence and gratitude

Features of the horticulture therapy garden:

  • Standing tables to work with potted plants to enhance balance and strength
  • Wheelchair accessible planting tables and plant beds for appropriate access
  • Granite walking path to promote mobility and circulation
  • Water feature and wind chime to enhance a tranquil, healing atmosphere
